The activity of the Centre of Excellence GLYCOBIOS is focused on the study of enzymes degrading and modifying complex saccharides of microbial, plant and mammalian origin. The research includes isolation and biochemical characterization of glycanases, transglycosylases and glycosyl-transferases, mechanism of their action, cloning of the corresponding genes, their heterologous expression, crystallization of native and expressed proteins, determination of their 3D structure, theoretical calculations of their active centers, design and synthesis of specific inhibitors and their testing. Research methodology comprises biochemistry, proteomics, genomics, theoretical and synthetic organic chemistry, crystallography and structure determination. Obtained knowledge is being exploited in design and synthesis of new drugs, pesticides, food additives, modification of polysaccharides, plant biocontrol and biodegradation of plant materials.
